Realismo social (social realism) is a literary and artistic movement that emerged in the early 20th century and gained prominence during the Great Depression of the 1930s. It aimed to depict the social and economic realities of the working class and the poor, and to critique the inequalities and injustices of capitalism and industrialization.
Social realist writers and artists sought to expose the harsh conditions of working-class life and to give voice to the experiences and struggles of marginalized groups, such as immigrants, African Americans, and women. They often used a documentary-like style and incorporated elements of naturalism and realism to create a sense of authenticity and credibility.
Some of the defining characteristics of social realism include a focus on everyday life and mundane events, a rejection of idealism and romanticism, an emphasis on social issues and political commentary, and an interest in representing the psychological and emotional realities of the working class.
Social realism had a significant impact on literature, art, and film in the United States and other countries during the 1930s and beyond. Many works of social realism continue to be studied and appreciated for their insights into the social and political realities of the time.
